The Hungarian Prison Service is an armed law enforcement agency under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of the Interior. Its central-level administrative body is the Hungarian Prison Service Headquarters, under which belongs 30 penal institution, 10 commercial companies and 4 institutions – the Educational, Training and Rehabilitation Centre of the Prison Service, the Prison Service Department of the National University of Public Service, the Central Hospital of the Prison Service and the Forensic Psychiatric and Mental Institution. The first three institutions are for the training of staff while the two medical institutions provides health care for the inmates. There are more than 8000 members of our staff. The supervision of lawful operation is exercised by the Prosecutors' Office.
Our mission is to perform all of our legally required obligations and contribute to the public safety of Hungary.
Our Prison Service Staff is dedicated to deliver our main objectives:
- maintaining secure custody and good order in our prisons
- caring for prisoners with humanity
- providing ample opportunity to personal development of the inmates
- reducing recidivism
- and legal conformity during the period of incarceration.
The Hungarian Prison Service carries out measures and sentences of imprisonment and criminal procedure enforcement measures and also executes confinements for fine defaulters and – as regulated by legislation – deals with law enforcement custody.
