Prison Museum
At the centre of Sátoraljaújhely, next to the Sátoraljaújhely Strict and Medium Regime Prison is the Museum of the Hungarian Prison Service. The exhibition presents the comprehensive historical and professional development of the prison service, the Hungarian penal system and the situation of the inmates. The visitors get to know the methods of revenge punishment, maiming, the death penalty and the development and change of the custodial sentence. The exhibition presents the current system, life, education, employment and art of the inmates as well.
The digital data is stored in a databank, which is used by the researchers. Photos and descriptions of objects related to the prison service from the 18th century are stored here. In the museum ceramics and paintings made by the inmates are exhibited as well.
Students of the educational institutions may participate in basic museum pedagogy courses. Children and youth may come to know the consequences of criminal activity which may help the development of law-abiding behaviour and culture. It is possible for the teachers and psychologist of the museum to hold an extraordinary class meeting, during which they may provide help for kids in processing what they have seen.
Nearby schools regularly ask the professionals of the museum to hold crime prevention or prison service-related lectures and the local Crime Prevention Committee considers the Museum a strategic partner.
